Steve Hicken’s principle teachers include Frank McCarty, William Hibbard, and John Boda. He holds degrees from The University of North Carolina-Greensboro, The University of Iowa, and Florida State University.

Hicken has written music on commission from such performers as Andrew Luchansky, John Salmon, Pamela Ryan, David Irwin, and John W. Parks, Jr. He has also been commissioned by the Governor’s School of North Carolina, The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, the Florida State University College of Music, Furman University, rarescale, and the Fromm Music Foundation of Harvard University.
