General Information

A two-day symposium for reading and recording New Brass Chamber Music for Symphonic Brass Quintet (2Tpt, 1Hn, 1Tbn, & Tuba).

Each work (maximum of 16) will receive 30 minutes with the resident musicians, including reading with composer comments (composer does not have to be present), performance run-through and recording the entire session. Because of this time restraint, works over 15 minutes are discouraged.

All sessions are free and open to the public who, because of recording considerations, exercise proper concertgoer etiquette.

Some of the goals of this symposium are:

  • to provide an unbiased equal-opportunity performance experience for composers of new music for Brass Quintet.
  • to give the composer an opportunity to hear their work performed by an outstanding group of fine musicians who are open to exploring new music.
  • to give the composer an opportunity to discover and work out any performance issues with live musicians.
  • to provide the composer with a good recording for publicity purposes, such as submitting music to publishers, prospective performers, or competitions. This will NOT be a polished concert performance. Composers are certainly welcome to make further arrangements with the musicians for a more in-depth or for-profit collaboration.

This symposium is not:

  • a competition. No winners, no losers. Just new music.
  • an event where music is reviewed.
  • a polished concert performance.

Since this is our first symposium, it is possible, with input from participating composers, that these features may be included as additional events in the future.

Submission Guidelines

Composers may submit up to two unpublished works and (each requires a separate submission fee.) Present composers may work with the ensemble and provide comments during their allotted time to ensure a good representation of their work. Composers are also required to provide a 1Gb or higher SD card for their recording. Absent composers must provide media with their submission and an appropriate padded Self-addressed postage-paid envelope. If there are more than 16 submissions, dual submissions will be accepted on a first-received basis. Submissions may be rejected (and not returned) if the score or parts are illegible or poorly prepared. The symposium also reserves the right to decline submissions (which will be returned) at its discretion.

DEADLINE for submissions is May 1, 2009

[Received, not postmarked]

Submissions (with application & fee) should be sent to the coordinator:
R. Kevin Paul

Fee

Each work (maximum of two) must be accompanied by a $200 submission fee.
A separate check or money order must be provided for each work (in case only one is scheduled). Payments will be held until the submission deadline, based on scheduling considerations.

The submission fee is non-refundable if the work is accepted and scheduled.
Checks or money orders (US $ only) must be made payable to:
WATERTON BRASS MUSIC LLC and received (not postmarked) by the submission deadline.

Recording and Use Permission

Composers must provide recording media in the form of 1Gb or higher SD card. Recordings will be made using 2 Edirol R-09HR 24bit High-Resolution Recorders (one for the composer, one for the symposium & backup). The symposium and the Roanoke Chamber Brass reserve the right to use any recordings for promotional purposes. The symposium intends to make the recordings and information about the works and composers available on its website. You may decline to have your work posted on the symposium website by indicating so on the application.

Only works from the first 16 composers will be scheduled. In the event there are less than 16 composers, dual submissions will be accepted on a first-received basis.
