A little religion, a little fanfare, and a little drama make up this quasi tone poem for symphonic brass ensemble. PRAETORIANS is a brief music journey through the evolution of Rome's Praetorian Guard. In the beginning, Praetorians came from the best-trained military units to serve as elite bodyguards for high-ranking politicians and military leaders. The Praetorian Guard evolved into the personal army of the Emperors, guarding the Emperor at home and on campaign, serving as peacekeepers in Rome and neighboring towns, and providing civil stability for centuries. They eventually became corrupt and wielded absolute power, demonstrated by their assassination and installation of Emperors for their own gain or for the highest bidder.
